Subitizing is the ability to recognize more or less, or a specific quantity without counting. For example if you roll a pair of dice, you likely know how many pips (dots) there are on the tops of those dice without counting.
There are two types of subitizing: perceptual and conceptual.
Perceptual subitizing is immediate recognition, like the 3 on a die.
Conceptual subitizing involves recognizing parts, like the 3 and 5 on each die, and using that information to recognize 8.
